The Ministry of Agriculture, Southern Province is proud to announce the launch of the Ilwatta Amuna Development Programme, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming agricultural practices and improving the livelihoods of farmers across the Southern Province. This programme focuses on the development of underutilized agricultural lands through modern cultivation techniques, provision of quality planting material, and comprehensive farmer training.
The programme targets key agricultural zones within Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts, with special emphasis on home garden development, spice cultivation, and organic farming. Beneficiary farmers will receive technical guidance, subsidized inputs, and market linkage support.
A special training programme on Business Name Registration procedures has been organized for officers and the public. Participants will receive hands-on guidance on the e-BRSPIS online registration system.
The annual Farmer Field Day provides an opportunity for farmers to showcase their crops, exchange knowledge on best practices and receive direct support from Ministry officials and technical officers.
A one-day workshop focusing on cooperative society management, financial literacy and compliance with the Cooperative Societies Act will be conducted for cooperative officers in Galle district.
The Department of Irrigation will inaugurate a newly completed minor irrigation scheme in Matara district, expected to benefit over 350 farming families by providing reliable water supply for the upcoming Yala season.
As part of the National Food Security Programme, the Department of Agriculture will distribute free vegetable seedlings to registered farming households across all three districts of the Southern Province.
